[Bloomberg] ESG Pioneer Expects Shakeout for Funds Hyped by ‘Fairy Dus...
After attracting trillions of dollars, the ESG fund industry is headed for a “shakeout” over the next five years, according to the man who coined the acronym. The finance sector has “sprinkled ESG fairy dust” on products that do little to account for environmental, social and governance risks, said Paul Clements-Hunt, adding that ESG funds in jeopardy include those that track benchmark indexes, some of which invested in Russia.

[The Guardian] Oil and gas facilities could profit from plugging methane...
Plugging methane from leaky oil and gas facilities would be free of cost almost everywhere in the world, and in many cases would produce a significant profit, at today’s soaring gas prices, the International Energy Agency has found, suggesting that governments have few excuses for not taking action to curb emissions of the powerful greenhouse gas.Governments have been underreporting their emissions of methane to a dramatic extent, and those emissions are still rising fast, according to the Global Methane Tracker report from the IEA published on Wednesday. Using satellites and other new data, the energy watchdog found emissions were about 70% higher than national governments had suggested, showing the need for far greater monitoring, as well as efforts to staunch leaks.

Emmanuel Macron has announced a “renaissance” for the French nuclear industry with a vast programme to build as many as 14 new reactors, arguing that it would help end the country’s reliance on fossil fuels and make France carbon neutral by 2050.“What our country needs ... is the rebirth of France’s nuclear industry,” Macron said in a speech in the eastern industrial town of Belfort, in which he lauded the country’s technological prowess.

[BBC NEWS] Mount Everest: Mountain's highest glacier melting rapidly, ne...
Climate change is causing the highest glacier on Mount Everest to melt at a rapid pace, a new study has found.Researchers led by the University of Maine found that the South Col Glacier has lost more than 180ft (54m) of thickness in the last 25 years. The glacier, which sits around 7,906m (25,938 ft) above sea-level, is thinning 80 times faster than it first took the ice to form on the surface. The rate of decline has been blamed on warming temperatures and strong winds.Scientists leading the study found that since the 1990s, ice that took around 2,000 years to form has melted away.ADVERTISEMENTThey also noted that the glacier's thick snowpack has been eroded, exposing the underlying black ice to the sun and accelerating the melting process.Dr Mariusz Potocki, one of the study's lead re...

[BBC NEWS] Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy
European scientists say they have made a major breakthrough in their quest to develop practical nuclear fusion - the energy process that powers the stars. The UK-based JET laboratory has smashed its own world record for the amount of energy it can extract by squeezing together two forms of hydrogen. If nuclear fusion can be successfully recreated on Earth it holds out the potential of virtually unlimited supplies of low-carbon, low-radiation energy. The experiments produced 59 megajoules of energy over five seconds (11 megawatts of power). This is more than double what was achieved in similar tests back in 1997.ADVERTISEMENTIt's not a massive energy output - only enough to boil about 60 kettles' worth of water. But the significance is that it validates design choices that have been m...

A new study, involving dozens of researchers working in 100 countries, estimates the world to have 73,300 species of tree, with 9,000 not even yet discovered. It is thought 40% of all undiscovered tree species are in South America. Planet Earth is home to 14% more tree species than previously thought, with thousands yet to be discovered, according to a global count conducted by dozens of researchers around the world. The new study, compiled by 140 researchers in 100 countries, estimates the world to have 73,300 species, with 9,000 not even yet discovered.Sponsored linkRecommended byMan Who Made $95 million in 2008 Reveals New PredictionHow to make all the money you need — in any market — using a single stock.VproBut most undiscovered species are rare and live in tropical forests, w...

[BBC NEWS] Climate change: UK plants now flowering a month earlier
Climate change is causing UK plants to flower almost a month earlier on average, according to a study.Just as autumn leaf fall is being delayed by warmer weather, flowers are appearing earlier on trees and shrubs. But while some might welcome these untimely blooms, scientists are warning of the risks. They say if the trend continues, there are knock-on effects for birds, insects and whole ecosystems.Ecological mismatch may kick in, which would have a dramatic effect "on the functioning and productivity" of nature and farming, said lead researcher, Prof Ulf Buntgen of the University of Cambridge.ADVERTISEMENT"Our climate system is changing in a way that affects us and our environment," he told BBC News. One in three wild trees face extinctionPlant extinction 'bad news for all species'A really ...

[Sky News] Climate change: Deal to help end deforestation misses first d...
A major deal to help end deforestation has missed its first deadline just months after it was signed at COP26, Sky News can reveal. At the Glasgow climate summit, a group of donor countries promised $500m (£370m) to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to protect the Congo Basin - which absorbs 4% of the world's carbon dioxide but is suffering widespread forest loss - in a pact signed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.Sponsored linkRecommended byMan Who Made $95 million in 2008 Reveals New PredictionVproIn return, the DRC promised to publish an audit of all logging contracts, which would help weed out the illegal ones, such as those failing to provide protections for frontline communities or biodiversity. But the audit was not published by the end of 2021 as promised, the DRC government has...

[Forbes] The Way Companies Treat Their Employees Will Determine If They...
The way companies treat their employees will become the deciding factor for success or failure in our new post-pandemic era. We are in a war for talent. It's hard to believe after such a harsh 2020 and early 2021, with millions of Americans losing their jobs, we’re now talking about workers having the upper hand. We’ll likely see two types of corporate cultures arise. The winners will be the ones who learned that they need to treat their people with respect and dignity. Organizations that lack empathy and are callous toward their employees’ mental and emotional well-being will fall out of favor. Some companies have been relatively heavy-handed. David Solomon, the CEO of top-tier investment bank Goldman Sachs, demanded that his people come back to the office. He referred to remote...
